Berlin — and the NYT Listicle I Love: Spilled Milk #139
4 things I'm excited about this week.
1. City of the Week: It’s Berlin.
Some of my kids (that’s how I refer to my friends’ children with whom I am very close) are in grad school overseas, and they met up in Berlin. The call came in over the weekend: “What do we do?” Here is what I told them about one of my favorite cities to spend a long weekend or a week … or a month.
Rogacki: My fave sit-down food hall. I love this place as much as any other. The history, the food quality, the choices! Go there.
KaDeWe: Still the heavyweight champ in all of northern Europe for a luxe food hall experience. Wander this place and eat up. It is singular.
Arminiusmarkthalle: A 140-year-old market hall that is one of the best in Europe. Amazing food vendors, perfect vibe.
Lokal: The name says it all. Local food including Brandenburg wild boar, cooked by some of the best chefs in the city. A must.
Örnek: Go for the whole menu but stay and return for the lahmacun, which is SUPERB. Casual and easy spot that I love.
Doyum: The Turkish food in Berlin is superb, and the cuisine is wildly underrated here in the states. Doyum serves superb Turkish food, and the Kreuzberg neighborhood is filled with things to do before or after a meal.
Adana Grillhaus: Another gem. Yes, it’s also known for superb Turkish cuisine, but you will want to eat more than one Turkish meal here in Berlin.
Tim Raue: Fine dining at its best, here, in Berlin. If you want a fancy meal, this is the spot. Delicious, creative, superb service and they don’t take themselves too seriously.
When it comes to hotels, I like all of the ones below, especially the Soho House because all my nightlife needs and lodging needs are under one roof.
