This is not left or right, it’s not red or blue. This is for us all. We all win when we all VOTE! Special thanks the Independent Restaurant Coalition (I am a co-founder) and our Executive Director Erika Polmar.
As we look ahead to the 2024 elections, the restaurant industry stands at a pivotal crossroads. With 15.5 million employees representing nearly 10% of all jobs in the United States, our industry is not only one of the largest employers in the country but also one of the most diverse. With the Restaurants Rally the Vote campaign, we have a unique opportunity to play a crucial role in increasing civic engagement by rallying our employees and customers to make their voices heard this November.
In the coming months, we hope you’ll join us in using your platforms to encourage voter turnout—not just in November but for all elections. We’ve created a comprehensive guide to help you support this non-partisan effort, ensuring that everyone in our industry has the resources they need to make their voices heard.
Ways You Can Get Involved
Ensure Voter Registration
The need: Make sure voters are registered at their current addresses before registration deadlines.
The timing: September 17, 2024—National Voter Registration Day
Why it matters: Millions of eligible voters remain unregistered due to a lack of information. Whether it's due to moving, turning 18 or becoming a citizen, many people are unaware they need to register or update their registration.
What you can do: Share the National Voter Registration online registration tool link on your social media or in company communications.
Social media: You'll find an easy to download graphic here.
Recruit Poll Workers
The need: Recruit people to staff polling places on Election Day.
The timing: Ongoing through mid-October
Why it matters: Poll workers are essential to the smooth operation of elections. With many longtime poll workers stepping down, there’s a significant need for young, healthy, tech-savvy and bilingual workers to ensure polling locations stay open.
What you can do: Share the sign-up link, powerthepolls.org on your social media or in company communications. Consider providing employees with time off to work the polls.
Share Restaurants Rally the Vote assets
The timing: Ongoing through Election Day—Tuesday, November 5, 2024
Why it matters: The restaurant industry represents nearly 10% of the workforce in the United States, and it’s critical that all workers have easy access to information about voter registration, locations of polling places and more.
What you can do: Share the social assets provided in the Restaurants Rally the Vote toolkit leading up to Election Day. Posting on social media platforms is an easy way to keep key benchmarks—including reminders to register to vote and make a voting plan —top-of-mind among staff, customers, vendors and peers.
By participating in these efforts, we can help ensure that everyone in our industry—and beyond—has a voice in the 2024 elections. Together, we can help ensure that everyone’s voice is heard.
As soon as I became old enough to vote, I registered, and it has never expired. Additionally, I have worked at the polls for many years. I found it to be both fun and educational. I would recommend being a poll worker to everyone. Thank you for the promotion of both registering and voting!
This is great - thanks!
