Houston is often thought of as a city of concrete, a gulf-side urban environment that plays second fiddle to other southern food towns.
But if you think that, then you haven’t been.
Houston is a massive metropolis that extends out to Galveston Bay. Space Center Houston is there, the coastal visitor center at NASA’s astronaut training and flight control complex. The city has a smallish downtown considering how big the metro area is. It’s home to the theater district, the Houston Grand Opera, and the Historic District, with plenty of 19th century architecture. And it’s also home to the Houston Astros, baseball’s newest dynasty. If Houston were a country it would have the 26th largest economy in the world. It has 90 consular offices from other nations. The city itself is larger than NYC, LA, and Chicago!
MOST interestingly to me, is that while the cognoscenti argues about whether LA is a global powerhouse food town, when Chicago became one, or what the next small/big food city will be, places like Portland and Birmingham and Minneapolis have been written about all year. Houston is overdue!
The reason I mention all this is to emphasize what a great food town Houston is. Because of its’ access, diversity, and reach you know the city and culture there is a great incubator for deliciousness. Here are some places you should check out and apologies to anyone I missed, starting with the food news that makes for an interesting 2023 in Houston.
