Sardinia might not have the glamour of Capri or the cinematic allure of the Amalfi Coast, but that’s its secret weapon. While other islands flaunt their chic appeal to crowds of selfie stick-wielding tourists, Sardinia keeps its cool and its wild, unspoiled beauty. Historically, Sardinia has been the strategic gem of the Mediterranean, coveted by the Phoenicians, the Romans and the Catalans. It’s still a prize today, but one you don’t have to elbow through throngs to experience. You know how much I love Ischia, Sicily and the little islands off the coast of Puglia, but pound for pound Sardinia fights above its weight class. It’s big enough that you can get lost, which for me is the essence of travel.
Plus the food culture sings with sun-drenched flavors such as the fregola with red shrimp that I am making on Wednesday for you. I think Sardinia is a revelation waiting to happen. Trust me, this is the island where you can dive into the clearest waters in Europe, feast like a local at a family-run agriturismo and toast a crimson sunset with a glass of Cannonau. Happy travels.
