Road Tripping: Chit Chat #26
What is your go-to road trip food?
It’s road trip season… if you’re stopping for fast food or at a giant highway gas station mega store, what is your go-to order?
OK, I have some strong opinions.
In Louisiana, it’s gas station boudin and pork cracklin’s. I order them from Billeaud’s and have their boudin in my freezer right now!
Anywhere I see Chester Fried Chicken, I have to grab some legs and thighs. Many gas stations in the south sell fried chicken livers and that’s a must. Ditto Kool-ickles. Those are Kool Aid pickles.
In the Southwest, it’s breakfast burritos with chorizo at any gas station with a food counter inside it. Gas station pizza is a must too… and yes, I like spongy orange circus peanuts for candy.
For fast food, I am on record as being a Culver’s guy. Luckily, I live in the Midwest and we have plenty of them.
In New England, I stop at any clam shack I can find. Bob’s Clam Hut in Kittery is a temple of awesome. And yes, a Sonic means giant slushies to me… grape for the win.
Have to have Combos and some local Jerky in the car. Culver's rules. Russ Kendall's Smoked fish and Pasties Plus Pasties when in Northern MN. Ellsworth cheese curds in WI. Any seafood by the seashore. Home made, gas station salt and vinegar chips in Canada. Green chili Stew/breakfast burrito from Frontier Restaurant in Albuquerque, walkin' Tacos from Bode's in Abiquiu NM.
Road Trips to me are for the sake of playing Nomad, exploring, discovery and sometimes rediscovery. It's nice to escape Milwaukee for a long weekend ... SOooo when it comes to "Road Trip" munchables, I'm a pack-a-cooler guy with my favorite noshes like artisan charcuterie cuts, a robust selection cheeses, a couple bottles of white & red wines; a 6-pack of iced Stella Artois. Assorted, veggies, fresh fruits & nuts, especially pistachios & smokehouse almonds; + a fresh loaf of country French or Italian bread...
Then the gang and I head-out to destination America... The serenity of nature, being in a secluded area, along a lake, river, coastal shoreline or the hills, mountains and canyons where nature has been undisturbed... they may be harder to find, yet they're out there, and that's the fun of road trip adventures... So this summer, let's everybody play Lewis & Clark.!!!
