Ask Me Anything: Your Prague Restaurant Recommendations
Every week I take your questions. This week, I talk more about disc golf, more Filipino dishes that I love and what it was like to work in Zambia.
Happy Friday, everyone, and welcome to the post I look forward to every week — the one where I answer your questions! When I say “ask me anything” I mean it: I’ve talked about my favorite ’90s movies, the best places to eat in Copenhagen, and my thoughts on tipping. Subscribers can post questions in the comments below or tag me on Notes.
This week is a little different because you wonderful Spilled Milk readers answered a question: In last week’s AMA, a Spilled Milk-er named Stephanie asked about where to eat in Prague. I didn’t have much intel, so I turned to you, and, boy, did you deliver. Thanks so much! These spots are going on my list of places to check out as well.
As I mentioned in the video, I’ve got some fun stuff for your calendars:
• Season 3 of “Andrew Zimmern's Wild Game Kitchen” will debut this fall on Outdoor Channel.
• I’ll be at the Virginia Highlands Festival in Southwest Virginia on July 19 and 20 with my friend Travis Milton. Details here.
• Los Angeles! I’ll be cooking at the “Netflix Bites” pop-up as will chefs including Curtis Stone, Dominique Crenn and Jacques Torres. Make reservations here.
This week’s questions
Denise:
Humbling to watch. The fortitude of the female farmers, to those amazing kids building the soil-less gardens not only to learn, but to bring food to the classroom!
Curious....lots of smiles in those pictures, but also a few looking a big more skeptical....how was the reception , interaction with you? Especially the kids? Was it love at first sight? 😂
Wooky:
Let’s talk disc golf…..I was so happy to learn you are a long time lover of the sport….what’s your favorite disc and course?
Inna:
Have you tried dinuguan (blood pork stew?) and lechon paksiw?😅
Follow-up: Your Prague recommendations
Bruce:
The restaurant “Terasa U Zlaté studně” has outstanding Bohemian cuisine in a romantic rooftop setting just below the Prague Castle offering a spectacular birds-eye view of Prague by night. To sample the famous beef from Czech Fleckvieh cattle, pork from the famous Přeštice pigs (crossbred with wild boar) and traditional Bohemian sausages and smoked meats, go to Naše Maso butcher shop at Dlouhá 39. When in Prague, you must sample their renown beef and pork and Naše Maso can also recommend restaurants that serve Fleckvieh beef and Přeštice pork.
Angela:
We were in Prague in 2018 and dined at Field just after they earned their Michelin star. The tasting menu was delightful, not pretentious, fussy or mannered as tasting menus can sometimes be but creative and thoughtful. What was really revelatory was the accompanying nonalcoholic drinks menu, each nuanced complex beverage carefully crafted to match its accompanying dish
We saw the chef sketching his menus in the foyer, like a game developer making a mind map. Really fascinating!
Bruce:
Forgot to mention for Stephanie: go to Sisters Bistro in Prague near Naše Maso butcher shop on Dlouhá to sample traditional Czech “chlebíčky” (open faced sandwiches & small bites). You can sample smoked meats, cheeses, & the wildly popular Czech favorite beetroot all on sunflower bread. Great lunch spot.
Katchkah which means duck I think. The restaurant had 17 iterations of duck. I was there 6 years ago and then it was over 300 years old. The duck was wonderful. Old world Prague. We stayed at the Hotel Paris which was named to be a slap in the face of the Nazis who took it over in WW2. It was commandeered by the Nazi high command for its high ranking officers. It gave this Jew great joy to use the same toilets as the defeated Nazis if you get my meaning. The hotel had a restaurant which made a dessert of a multilayered chocolate cake with fresh peaches. I have the recipe but I don't know where to post it. stu borken stubeee
Our favorite restaurant in Prague is U modre kachnicky II (The Blue Duckling). Spectacular food and service.
