The legality of ketchup on a hotdog in Chicago ends at the age of 5. I'm for mustard, celery seed, pickle spears, sport peppers and tomato only if it's in season. We may not own pizza here in Chi Town but we own the dog dragged through the garden:

I might get some flack for this but I am a born and bred Minnesotan. Hormel chili (no beans), onions and mustard.

Spicy brown mustard, maybe some onions or sauerkraut. Maybe some pickled jalapeno slices. Ketchup?? Let me ask you - do you put mustard on your fries?

Cardinal sin....ketchup on a hot dog. I don't even put it on a burger. I like mustard and raw onion or sauerkraut. Since I hail from Detroit, I do love a "coney" dog....chili, mustard, raw onions. OMG I'm getting hungry.

Mustard, onions, and chili only go on a hotdog. Have you ever been to The Varsity in Atlanta? They have the world's best dogs, and that's how they come dressed.

My mouth. Other than that, who cares? But Andrew, I promise, if I'm ever in the presence of you and hot dogs at the same time, I will NOT surreptitiously squirt a bunch of ketchup on your 'dog.

I'm from Brazil and I live in São Paulo and around here we like a lot of things that will seem strange to New Yorkers, but here we go we put mashed potatoes, catupiry cheese, chedar cheese, potato straw and vinaigrette which is a type of pico de galo but without the spiciness, not to mention the usual ketchup and mustard ingredients

Well the thing is, I'm not eating what anybody else likes. So if they want to put ketchup on a hotdog, knock yourself out. For me, it would be like putting mayo on a pastrami on white with lettuce... Pastrami goes on rye with mustard and maybe swiss. You try that in NYC and you could get hurt... It's just not done! Otherwise, mustard, onions, dill relish and maybe celery salt.

I think your disparaging remarks about ketchup are a bit unfair! Some of us are allergic to mustard, so sauerkraut, ketchup, hot sauce, and/or pickles are necessary adjuncts to a sausage or hot dog in a bun.

I like Dijon mustard and relish on mine, but why should I care if my husband puts ketchup on his? There are too many things to worry about and whether or not someone puts ketchup on a hot dog is certainly not one of them :)

As for the question of “is a hot dog a sandwich”: Yes.

The only other plausible qualifier is a taco, but imagine if someone asked you if you wanted a taco and then brought you a hot dog. Violence might ensue.

If it was presented as a sandwich you might think the person a bit odd, but you’d still be grateful for the hot dog.

President Barack Obama once famously told Anthony Bourdain that ketchup on a hotdog shouldn’t be allowed after the age of 8 and he was absolutely right. There’s a ton of acceptable toppings: mustards, kraut, onions, pickles/relish, tomatoes, lettuce (in very specific context), slaw, chili, cheese… a veritable smorgasbord of options. Ketchup isn’t one of them. Stop it.

I’m partial to a strong mustard and some kraut or Cholula and coleslaw.

Hey AZ, I agree, a 'Hot Dog' in it's broadest sense is a sandwich... thusly, Hamburgers, Brats, Cubanos, Heroes, Grinders, Polish & Kielbasa Sausages, etc., etc,... thus 'specifically' 'a Hot Dog is a style of sandwiches... along with all the others. 'Sandwiches' therefore embody a HUGE category...

As for myself, grilled/sauteed onions, grilled/sauteed bell peppers & grilled/sauteed mushrooms; with a mustard pickle relish & a grilled/toasted pretzel bun.... otherwise, a Chicago Dog would be delightful w/a ice cold IPA... that's my jam when it comes to 'Tubular' sandwiches... see'ya, I'm hungry all of a sudden..!!??!!

I'm simple. Ketchup, and onions (raw or grilled---whichever is available). Mustard (out of the yellow bottle) is optional. Everything else is fine for others.

And whatever makes your taste buds come to attention, makes you happy, awesomeness! Let's keep it light and airy, because there's too much nastiness in the world. 😋😁❤🌭

Usually I put ketchup, mustard, onion and pickle relish. One day I sauted some mushrooms and put those on my hotdog by itself and it was really good. I haven't done it since. I guess it was a weird craving but it was good lol.

It's true: No ketchup on a Chicago dog once you're past second grade, which I learned as a kid at Big Herm's in Skokie, a 'burb of Chicago. Mustard, definitely the neon-green relish, pickle spear and tomato, poppy seed bun, and please, grill the dog, don't boil it.

I'm from Chicago. So, for me, it's an all-beef Vienna on a steamed bun with mustard, sweet pickle relish, chopped onion, and a dill pickle. (Never been a fan of sport peppers or tomato on there.)

And the best in the world are at Gene's & Jude's in River Grove, IL where they don't have poppy seeds on their buns (GASP!) but do put a large handful of fresh-cut fries right on top and then wrap it all up together.

A "snappier" dog you will not find anywhere. At least I haven't.

Damn. Now I'm salivating.

Oh yeah, and never catsup not unless you're under the age of 10. (I'm generous.)
