I am the luckiest woman in the world. I live my ideal vacation every day by eating all my meals in restaurants, having takeout, or delivered meals. I feel super because eating only restaurant meals helps keep the restaurant industry flourishing and makes it possible for lower income workers to remain employed and off welfare. I have not cooked a meal in 11 years, have lost 125 pounds on restaurant meals, and have gone from a size 24w to a size 8. See ElaineAbramson.com.
Since life is short and the world is large, I make it a point to see something new at least once a year. This is the main reason why unlike many of my Michigan friends I do not want to own a cottage or vacation home. I do not want to be obligated to go to the same place all the time. This year I'm going to Australia and Bologna Italy. I prefer culturally oriented trips to warm destinations like Florida.
This was my question to new hires. “You win the lottery what do you do in the first week and where would want to be at the end of the year.” Some freaked because they were looking for the right answer. Spoiler, there is none. My answer to loosen them up was I’d book the whole family in First Class on UA 1 ,that is a worldwide trip with 6 stops. You can take up to two months layover in any of the destinations and resume the trip later. I thought this would give us time to rent a nice place in each location and explore the surrounding areas. My kids were apprehensive until I told them this would be better than a year in High School waiting to graduate. Love you columns and videos but I agree you have a great living but everyone needs to step out of the race for a short time to do the race all the time.
Sleeping a lot, reading good books, watching good movies, time to let my mind wander. Oh wait, I just described the cold that kicked my ass HARD for most of June. (And it WAS in fact rejuvenating - launched a ton of change and innovation in my photography.)
Truth is that everything else I do, even vacation, is purpose-driven. Hunting, fishing, foraging, research, treating someone else to an experience. I pretty much rely on getting sick to have actual rest time, and dammit, I don't get sick very often.
Paris then a road trip around it. Waking up early, finding hot croissants, poking through cheese , chocolate and markets....dining in fancy restaurants as well as corner haunts.
I also need a stack of good books. I spent one day in Florence a few years ago, and I would say I'd like to spend a few weeks there and in Tuscany in general. A quiet apartment to rent, cool little restaurants within walking distance accompanied by unseasonably good weather for whatever time of year I happened to be there. Museum going as well.
We spent our honeymoon in Blancaneaux, a resort in the middle of Belize, and I can't wait to go back. Bizarrely I've been craving their house-made breakfast sausage ever since, and attempting to recreate it at home has been on my to-do list for a while. Only downside to the place was skeeters, but that's the price of paradise I suppose.
In August, Washington Island, Wis., on the beach, drinking Death's Door gin and tonic, reading John Grisham's first collection of novellas, "Sparring Partners," in the afternoon awaiting a walleye dinner over a campfire with friends.
Palm trees, fresh seafood, snorkeling. Trips to the countryside on the back of a scooter with a basket of market goodies. Swimming in the surf with my family and watching the skies at twilight.
I’m gonna need a beach and ideally a pool that overlooks a beach. Frosty drinks, a really good book (or three), great local food and a little local shopping. Definitely no Wi-Fi and my phone isn’t working (vacation for me is not just vacation from work but also from friends and family).
My wife and I are beach babies ... growing up in Miami Beach. That said, our ideal vacation will be to beaches we have not yet seen in the U.S., Caribbean, or South Seas. We prefer 'smallish' crowds, sparkling waters, a wide choice of water activities, and access to a variety of dinking and eating establishments.
I would love to travel through Europe, spending time with the family exchange students. My family has had 5, one is still in the United States. The other 4 live in Norway, Germany, Switzerland and Denmark.

Unlimited funds & time? Goa, Tokyo, Mumbai, Madives....How long am I living for?

Andrew, Take a vacation! You deserve one. I am going to Portland Maine the week after Labor day.
Any recommendations?

Peaceful and serene

San Sebastian or Lyon. A man's got to eat.
